    THE 1968 GHS CLASS OF CHAMPIONS

    The graduating class of 1968 at Greencastle High School made a significant impact on the school’s sports history. Their consecutive victories in the Sectional tournament as the first team to achieve this honor were truly remarkable. It is worth noting that eight out of the nine starters were from the class of 1968. It is important to emphasize that during that time, sports had no divisions, and only one champion was crowned for each sport.

    TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS

    In addition to their team accomplishments, the 1968 class also set both team and individual records. The 1967 basketball team, with half of its members from the 1968 class, set records for consecutive wins (12) and average points per season (82.2). The ’68 basketball team, on the other hand, set the record for the most points in a season (1978). Remarkably, all three of these records still stand today.

    INDIVIDUAL RECORDS

    Individual records were also established by members of the class of ’68 in basketball. Jay Frye tied the school record for assists in a game (15), while Pete Norris set records for rebounds in a game (34), season (520), and career (1032).


    The class of ’68 also made their mark in the GHS track team. John New held the shot put record for over 40 years, while Pete Norris set records in the two hurdles events. Additionally, Kevin See, Larry Boswell, and Pete Norris were part of the mile relay team that set the school record.


    Individually, members of the class of ’68 played on the first and second most championship teams in GHS history. Pete Norris played on five championship teams, while Jay Frye and John New played on four.
