In the South End, even families with limited means found creative ways to enjoy themselves. They would come together, pool their resources, and have delightful hog barbecues on special occasions and holidays. These joyous celebrations held a special place in everyone’s hearts, with even those who had moved away making sure to return and be a part of the festivities.

    The Power of Sports in the South End

    Sports played a pivotal role in the lives of the boys in the South End, serving as a source of inspiration and community pride. With the neighborhood being a safe haven, the boys roamed freely, even after dark, knowing everyone and feeling a strong sense of security. They admired their older brothers and uncles who excelled in high school sports, motivating them to follow in their footsteps. Fathers, uncles, and friends packed the stands at every game, showing unwavering support and pride in their young athletes. The entire neighborhood stood behind them, creating a legacy of athletic excellence.


    This legacy was solidified by the 1968 Class of Champions, a high school team that captured the spirit of the South End and brought immense pride to the community.
